ABOUT DEVOTION TO THE MOTHERLAND AND A HERO’S FATE IN THE ERA OF “VELVET” TRAITORS
It would seem that nothing in Nikol Pashinyan’s Armenia can surprise people anymore, yet some situations are still profoundly disturbing. Each such case once again reveals the moral degradation of authorities who have turned the state into an instrument of revenge and humiliation against those who truly served the country.
Felix Gabrielyan — a man whose name has for decades been associated with the Armenian Army, Artsakh, war, and state-building — is now being forced out onto the street. Felix Gabrielyan — former commissioner of Artsakh, head of the Military Training Department of the Defense Army, member of the Military Council of Armenia’s Ministry of Defense, Minister of Environment of Artsakh, adviser to the President, deputy of the first convocation of the NKR Parliament, recipient of the Military Cross Order, and a man who lost both his brother and father in war.

He has been ordered to vacate his rent-free 60-square-meter apartment on the grounds that it was “wrongfully provided” to him.
What a sudden devotion to legality on the part of the state.
This is how they treat a man who, after decades of service, did not build mansions, buy homes in Dubai, acquire hotels, gas stations, and construction companies under relatives’ names, or become a millionaire with elite real estate in central Yerevan.
Perhaps that was his greatest mistake.
He did not belong to Nikol’s circle of political profiteers who use power for personal enrichment. He was never among those who came to power without a real biography, without service or sacrifice, but with an enormous appetite for money, apartments, grants, positions, and comfort.

Armenia’s paradox is that the more a person has done for the country, the less protected he or she becomes. And conversely, the louder someone shouted in the streets, the more actively they helped dismantle the state, the more eagerly they contributed to capitulation, the more comfortable and prosperous their life has become.
Felix Gabrielyan never privatized his apartment. Like many of his generation, he probably never considered it necessary to turn state-provided housing into private property. He served, fought in war, worked, and fulfilled his duty to the state, while others mastered the art of privatizing everything — factories, land, high-ranking positions, and eventually the state itself.
After Artsakh’s treacherous surrender, Felix Gabrielyan was left with nothing. A man who devoted his entire life to Artsakh, its Army, and its statehood lost everything. He paid for his motherland with his health and with the lives of his father and brother. He lost his home, his property, and his normal life.
Now the authorities who failed to defend Artsakh and its people are trying, with cold bureaucratic cynicism, to deprive him even of his last shelter.
This is a demonstrative humiliation of an entire generation for whom the words “dignity,” “service to the motherland,” “Artsakh,” and “Army” are not empty slogans. The authorities relentlessly seek to show these people that their era is over, that their sacrifices mean nothing, and that their service to the state is worth nothing.
Felix Gabrielyan lived the life of an officer, a public servant, and a dignified man whose only property is the modest apartment granted to him for his service to the country. He did not become wealthy not because he lacked intelligence, but because he served honestly. It is precisely such modest and principled people whom the “velvet revolutionaries” especially despise.
For Nikol’s government, corrupt officials and villains are not the real threat. They fear people beside whom their own vanity and emptiness become especially visible.
