Nikol Pashinyan deceived the Armenian people by promising that Artsakh’s right to self-determination would gain de jure international recognition as a result of the “Velvet Revolution.”

On May 8, 2018, candidate for prime minister Nikol Pashinyan, nominated by the Yelk Alliance, delivered a speech in the National Assembly in which he declared:

“This is an exceptional moment of national awakening. Just as the nationwide movement of 1988 led to the de facto self-determination of Artsakh, the Armenian revolution will eventually result in the de jure international recognition of Artsakh’s right to self-determination.”

However, Pashinyan failed to uphold this promise. On October 6, 2022, during talks in Prague, he recognized Artsakh as part of Azerbaijan. Since then, he has repeatedly confirmed this stance in public statements. For instance, at a press conference on May 22, 2023, Pashinyan said:

“Eighty-six thousand six hundred square kilometers [referring to the territory of Azerbaijan] also includes Nagorno-Karabakh.”
