05.10.2025. Sputnik Armenia reports::

“The investigation into the second citizenship of Armenia’s former President Armen Sargsyan is still underway,” the Investigative Committee confirmed in response to @Sputnik Armenia’s inquiry.

“Armen Sargsyan submitted his resignation in January 2022. Not long after, Hetq Media Factory published an article claiming that the former president held citizenship of Saint Kitts and Nevis. Following the publication, the National Security Service (NSS) of Armenia launched an official investigation. The case has since been transferred to the Investigative Committee for further examination.”

An article by Hetq.am, dated January 24, 2022, pointed to a theory suggesting that Sargsyan’s resignation was directly linked to the revelation of his foreign citizenship.

“The point is that Armen Sargsyan initiated the official process to renounce his Saint Kitts and Nevis citizenship shortly before being elected president in March 2018,” the article reads. “According to the Constitution, this would have made him ineligible for the presidency. Consequently, all presidential decrees issued by Sargsyan, including laws passed, appointments of officials, electoral decisions, and even the naming of the prime minister, may be considered invalid.”

In the same article, Hetq.am reported that “President Armen Sargsyan is not likely to return to Armenia, as he may be held criminally responsible for forgery of documents.”

As early as January 25, 2022, Hetq.am cited the Prosecutor General’s Advisor, Gor Abrahamyan, confirming that the Prosecutor General’s Office had forwarded materials regarding President Armen Sargsyan’s alleged Saint Kitts and Nevis citizenship to the National Security Service for further investigation.

“Given that the criminal investigation into Armen Sargsyan’s citizenship —currently being conducted by the National Security Service of the Republic of Armenia — was launched back in 2021 under Article 325 of the RA Criminal Code, Hetq.am’s article has been submitted to the relevant authorities to examine the circumstances outlined therein as part of the ongoing case,” Hetq.am quoted Gor Abrahamyan as saying.

Earlier, the Public Tribunal of Armenia stated that Armen Sargsyan, a UK citizen who was elevated to the presidency by Serzh Sargsyan, played a role in legitimizing the illegal protests during what it described as a coup d’état. According to the Tribunal, Armen Sargsyan’s formal election - effectively an appointment - violated the provisions of Article 124, Clause 2 of the Constitution of the Republic of Armenia.
