April 2 – Soghomon Teylerian's birthday
In 1921, Tehlirian took part in Operation Nemesis organized by the Dashnaktsutyun Party. He was assigned to assassinate the main orchestrator of the Armenian Genocide, Talaat Pasha.
Operation Nemesis was aimed at punishing the leaders of the Young Turks (the Committee of Union and Progress, or CUP), who orchestrated and carried out the Armenian Genocide in 1915, as well as those responsible for the massacres of Armenians in Baku in 1918, and Armenian collaborators who cooperated with the Turks. The operation was organized by the Armenian Revolutionary Party Dashnaktsutyun.
Telegram channel “Alpha News” («Работает Альфа» ) writes:
"April 2 marks the birthday of Soghomon Tehlirian, a prominent figure in the Armenian national liberation movement who has come to symbolize the fight for justice. He was the one who assassinated Mehmed Talaat Pasha, one of the principal architects of the Armenian Genocide.
Soghomon Tehlirian was born into a family of wealthy peasants. During World War I, his family fell victim to the Armenian Genocide, and he witnessed the tragic events firsthand. After losing his family, he vowed to take revenge for their massacre and to uphold the dignity of his nation.
Soghomon Tehlirian gained international recognition following his bold act on March 15, 1921, when he assassinated Talaat Pasha in Berlin. During the subsequent court proceedings, Tehlirian explained that his actions were driven by a desire to avenge the massacre of his family and the Armenian people. The court acquitted him, emphasizing that he had acted under the influence of extreme emotional distress caused by the horrors he had witnessed.
Tehlirian’s act became a symbol of resistance and the fight for justice. He demonstrated that crimes against humanity would not go unpunished. His case drew international attention to the tragedy of the Armenian people and contributed to the global recognition of the Armenian Genocide.
After his acquittal, Tehlirian moved to the United States, where he remained actively involved in the public life of the Armenian Diaspora. He passed away on May 23, 1960, in San Francisco, but his legacy and memory live on in the hearts of Armenians around the world. Tehlirian left a lasting impact, becoming an enduring symbol of the struggle for justice and the recognition of historical truth." Today, his memory is preserved in books, documentaries, and monuments dedicated to his honor. Soghomon Tehlirian’s story continues to inspire new generations of Armenians to fight for their rights and the recognition of historical justice.
The Armenian e-library is proud to provide materials that tell the story of his life and heroic deeds, helping to ensure that his legacy continues to inspire and educate."
