Vahagn Khachaturyan

Biography

Vahagn Khachaturyan was born on April 22, 1959, in the town of Sisian. In 1976, he graduated with distinction from Yerevan Secondary School No. 118. From 1976 to 1980, he studied at the Yerevan Institute of National Economy (now the Armenian State University of Economics), earning a degree in economics. Between 1980 and 1982, he served in the Soviet Armed Forces

Professional Background

Between 1982 and 1990, Vahagn Khachaturyan worked as an economist at the “Hrazdanmash” enterprise, where he also headed the economic research laboratory.

From 1990 to 1992, he worked at the “Mars” Factory, first as a department head and later as deputy general director.

Between 1990 and 1995, he served as a member of the Yerevan City Council.

From 1992 to 1996, he held the position of Mayor of Yerevan.

Between 1996 and 1999, he was a member of the National Assembly of Armenia, where he served on the Standing Committee on Financial-Credit, Budgetary, and Economic Affairs, and was a member of the Republic Parliamentary Faction.

From 1996 to 1998, Vahagn Khachaturyan served as Adviser to the President of the Republic of Armenia, Levon Ter-Petrosyan.

In 2000, he became a founding member of the “Armat” Center for the Development of Democracy and Civil Society.

In 2002, he was appointed Vice President of the Center for Political Science, Law, and Economic Research.

During the 2007 parliamentary elections in Armenia, Khachaturyan ran as a representative of the “Impeachment” Bloc.

In 2006, he co-founded the “Alternative” Socio-Political Initiative.

By February 2022, he was a member of the Armenian National Congress.

In 2002, he became Vice President of the Center of Political Science, Law and Economic Research.

From 2019 to 2021, he served as an independent member of the Board of Armeconombank OJSC.

On August 4, 2021, Vahagn Khacharutyan was appointed Minister of High-Tech Industry of Armenia.

President of Armenia

Following the resignation of President Armen Sarkissian on January 23, 2022, the ruling Civil Contract Party announced on January 30 its intention to nominate Vahagn Khachaturyan for the presidency.

He was elected President of Armenia on March 3 in the second round of the snap presidential election, after falling short by 10 votes in the first round. As the sole candidate, he received 71 votes in parliament, while the Mother Armenia and I Have Honor alliances boycotted the vote. His inauguration took place on March 13..
