Biography

Ararat Mirzoyan (Arm. Արարատ Սամվելի Միրզոյան) was born on November 23, 1979, in Yerevan. He is an Armenian statesman and politician, serving as the Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Armenia since August 19, 2021.

Mirzoyan graduated from the Faculty of History at Yerevan State University (YSU) in 2000, majoring in the Arts Department. In 2002, he received his Master’s degree from the same faculty.

In 2004, he completed his studies at the Academy of Public Administration of the Republic of Armenia, specializing in Public Administration and Local Self-Government.

In 2005, he completed his postgraduate studies at the Armenian Genocide Museum-Institute of the National Academy of Sciences of the Republic of Armenia, earning a PhD in History.

From 2005 to 2007, he served as Chief Archivist at the Department of Socio-Political Documents of the National Archives of Armenia.

Between 2007 and 2010, he worked as a specialist at HSBC Bank Armenia.

In 2011, Mirzoyan worked as an international news commentator, columnist, and analyst for the REGNUM International News Agency.

Between 2012 and 2013, he coordinated the Voter Awareness Program at the International Foundation for Electoral Systems (IFES).

From October 2012 to February 2013, he also taught at Yerevan State University. According to Mirzoyan, he was dismissed for criticizing Rector’s Assistant Gevorg Melkonyan and for participating in student strikes.

From 2013 to 2015, Mirzoyan led a research group under the “Aurora and 100 Lives” initiative of the “Development Initiatives of Armenia” Foundation (IDEA).

Between 2014 and 2017, he served as an expert on political parties and strategic planning at the Netherlands Institute for Multiparty Democracy (NIMD).

He is a founding member of the Civil Contract Party and has served on its board since 2016. In 2017, he was elected to Armenia’s National Assembly (6th convocation) as a member of the "Yelq" faction. He served on the Standing Committee on Science, Education, Culture, Youth and Sports.

In April 2018, Mirzoyan supported mass protests against the appointment of Serzh Sargsyan as prime minister.

On April 22, 2018, he and other protest leaders were detained by police on charges of organizing and participating in illegal mass demonstrations. The following day, Serzh Sargsyan resigned, and the detainees were released.

From 2018 to 2019, Mirzoyan served as First Deputy Prime Minister of Armenia.

On January 14, 2019, he was appointed Speaker of the National Assembly.

On November 10, 2020, in the wake of the trilateral ceasefire agreement with Azerbaijan, Mirzoyan was attacked and beaten by protesters outside the National Assembly building.

On August 19, 2021, Ararat Mirzoyan was appointed Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Armenia.
