Armen Sarkissian

Biography

Armen Sarkissian was born on June 23, 1953, in Yerevan.

Education

  • In 1970, he graduated from Yerevan Secondary School No. 114 with a gold medal.
  • 1970—1976 – Studied at the Department of Theoretical Physics and Mathematics, Yerevan State University (YSU).
  • 1976—1978 - Completed postgraduate studies at the Department of Theoretical Physics, Faculty of Physics, YSU.
  • 1979—1984 - Served as an assistant at the Department of Theoretical Physics, Faculty of Physics, YSU.
  • In 1981, he submitted his Candidate of Sciences (PhD equivalent) thesis in Physics and Mathematics on the topic: “Superdense Stellar Configurations in the Bimetric Theory of Gravity.”

He holds the academic degree of Candidate of Physical and Mathematical Sciences, the title of assistant professor, and is an Honorary Doctor of the National Academy of Sciences of the Republic of Armenia.

Work Experience

  • 1976–1990 – Lecturer at the Faculty of Physics, Yerevan State University. He founded the Department of Computer Modeling of Complex Systems within the Department of Theoretical Physics at YSU.
  • 1984—1985 — Visiting research fellow and visiting professor at the University of Cambridge.
  • 1986—1992 – Visiting professor and visiting research fellow at Moscow State University, as well as at several scientific centers and universities in Germany, the United States, Greece, and the United Kingdom.
  • 1991—1996 — Chargé d’affaires a.i. of Armenia to the United Kingdom.
  • 1992—1993 - Ambassador of Armenia to the United Kingdom.
  • 1993—1994 - Senior Ambassador of Armenia to Europe and the European Union.
  • 1995—1996 – Ambassador of Armenia to Belgium; Head of the European Catholic Community of Armenia; Ambassador of Armenia to the Vatican; and Ambassador of Armenia to Luxembourg.
  • 1996—1997 – Prime Minister of the Republic of Armenia.
  • 1998—2000 – Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of Armenia to the United Kingdom.
  • 2000—2013 - Served as Senior Advisor to the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD); Founder and Director of Eurasia House International; Founding Director of the Eurasia Centre at Cambridge University's Judge Business School; Founder of the annual Eurasian Media Forum; First Chairman of the Global Council on Energy Security at the World Economic Forum in Davos (Switzerland); Vice Chairman of the EastWest Institute in New York; Co-chair of the Euro-Atlantic Security Initiative; Founder and Chairman of the UK All-Party Parliamentary Group for Armenia. He also served as Senior Advisor to companies including Alcatel, Lucent, Telefónica, British Petroleum, BofA Securities, and others.
  • In 2013 (for several months) – Member of the Board of Directors of Lydian International, the company operating the Amulsar Mine in Armenia.
  • Since 2013, Member of the Board of Trustees of the Dilijan International School.

Sarkissian is the author of numerous academic publications in the fields of theoretical physics, astrophysics, computer modeling, political science, and transitional economics.

He is a member of the Global Leadership Foundation, serves on the Dean's Advisory Boards of both the Harvard Kennedy School and the Harris School of Public Policy at the University of Chicago, is a trustee of the John Smith Trust, and is the founder of the "Yerevan, My Love!" All-Armenian Charitable Foundation, among other affiliations.

Sarkissian holds the diplomatic rank of Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary

President of Armenia (2018-2022)

On March 2, 2018, Armen Sarkissian was elected President of Armenia. He officially assumed office on April 9, 2018.

On January 23, 2022, he submitted his resignation, with his presidential duties officially ending on February 1, 2022.
