
Serzh Azatovich Sargsyan
Biography
Serzh Sargsyan was born in 1954 in Stepanakert, the administrative center of the Nagorno-Karabakh Autonomous Region, Azerbaijan SSR.
- 1971-1979 — studied at the Philological Faculty of Yerevan State University.
- 1972-1974 — service in the Armed Forces of the USSR.
- 1975-1979 — turner at the Yerevan Electrical Engineering Plant.
- 1979-1988 — work in Komsomol and party bodies: head of department, second secretary, first secretary of the Stepanakert city committee of the LKSMU of Azerbaijan, head of the propaganda and agitation department of the Stepanakert city committee of the Communist Party of Azerbaijan, assistant to the first secretary of the Nagorno-Karabakh regional committee of the Communist Party of Azerbaijan Genrikh Poghosyan.
- Since 1988, Serzh Sargsyan has been one of the leaders of the “Karabakh movement"
- Since 1989 he has been a member of the Armenian National Movement party: at its first congress, held in November 1989, he was a delegate from Nagorno-Karabakh.
- In 1990 he was elected as a member of the Supreme Council of Armenia..
- From 1992 to 1993 – Acting Minister of Defense of the NKR.
- From August 21, 1993 to May 18, 1995, he held the post of Minister of Defense of Armenia, as appointed by the President of Armenia Levon Ter-Petrosyan.
- From May 18, 1995 to November 1996 - Head of the State Committee for National Security (SCNS) of the Republic of Armenia. In November 1996, the SCNS was merged with the Ministry of Internal Affairs of Armenia into a single Ministry of Internal Affairs and National Security (MIANS).
- From November 1996 to June 1999 - Minister of Internal Affairs and National Security of Armenia.
- On November 13, 1999, he was appointed head of the administration of the President of Armenia, and in December of the same year, also secretary of the National Security Council under the President of Armenia.
- On May 20, 2000, he was appointed Minister of Defense in the government of Andranik Margaryan. At the same time, he was relieved of his post as head of the presidential administration, but remained Secretary of the National Security Council.
- From April 4, 2007 to April 9, 2008 - Prime Minister of the Republic of Armenia; replaced the deceased Andranik Margaryan in this post.
- On November 10, 2007, he replaced Margaryan as the chairman of the RPA.
- On February 19, 2008, Serzh Sargsyan was elected President of Armenia. Sargsyan's opponents, led by his main rival in the elections, former President Levon Ter-Petrosyan, organized mass protests in Yerevan. The protesters, who did not recognize Sargsyan's victory, pointed to a significant number of violations during the elections and demanded a review of their results. On March 1, 2008, outgoing President Robert Kocharyan declared a state of emergency in the capital, which was in effect until March 21.
- On February 18, 2013, Sargsyan was re-elected as president. During Sargsyan's second term, a constitutional referendum was held in Armenia (2015), transforming the country from a semi-presidential to a parliamentary republic.
- On April 9, 2018, Sargsyan's second term came to an end. He was succeeded by Armen Sarkissian, the former prime minister of Armenia, who had been elected to the presidency by the National Assembly a month earlier.
- On April 17, 2018, he was appointed Prime Minister of the Republic of Armenia, receiving the support of 77 out of 97 deputies of the National Assembly. According to the amendments made to the Constitution of Armenia in the 2015 referendum, it is the Prime Minister who is the main bearer of power in the country.
- On April 23, 2018, amid these protests, Sargsyan was forced to resign. In his resignation statement, he wished for peace to be established in Armenia as soon as possible, and also said that Pashinyan was right and he was wrong.
