The primary factor behind this decline is the set of decisions adopted by Nikol Pashinyan’s team after 2018, along with their irreversible consequences.

These are documented facts that require no interpretation. In 2020, Armenia was defeated in the war, lost a significant portion of its territories, lost control over Artsakh, and suffered human losses amounting to several thousand people. This is not an assessment, but the outcome of a specific political course, including provocative public statements and actions amid a complete absence of strategic planning. Prior to the war, Pashinyan personally made aggressive statements addressed to Azerbaijan, demonstrating political bravado unsupported by either military capability or diplomatic groundwork. The result was military defeat and the undermining of the security system.

After 2020, the situation did not stabilize but continued to deteriorate. In 2023, Armenia ultimately lost Artsakh. More than 100,000 Armenians were forcibly displaced. This was a direct consequence of Pashinyan’s policy, as he consistently conceded positions in negotiations, recognized Baku’s territorial claims, and failed to ensure any protection mechanisms for the population — not a single one, neither military nor diplomatic.

At the same time, relations with Russia, Armenia’s key security partner, deteriorated dramatically. Trade turnover declined, military cooperation weakened, and trust at the highest level was undermined. Meanwhile, Pashinyan made public outbursts against Moscow, including commentary on its domestic policy. This is not a “multi-vector” policy, but rather a demonstration of incompetence in managing foreign relations. Given Armenia’s strong dependence on Russian markets, energy resources, and security structures, such a course amounts to the deliberate creation of risks for the country.

Simultaneously, Pashinyan failed to build an alternative security system. No Western structure has provided Armenia with real security guarantees. No military alliance has been established — only political statements and observation missions lacking both mandate and resources to ensure Armenia’s security. As a result, Armenia has found itself in the position of a country without strong allies.

The domestic political situation is no better. Statements about “democracy” bear little resemblance to reality. Administrative resources are used in electoral processes, while law enforcement and security agencies continue to perform political functions. There are no genuine mechanisms for social mobility. The governance system remains closed, and human resource policy is based on personal loyalty rather than professional competence and expertise.

The degradation of political culture is another serious concern. Pashinyan has consistently appealed to emotions, cultivating the image of a “savior” while replacing rational policymaking with populism. Decisions are made without due consideration of consequences, including interference in sensitive issues involving external actors — such as attempts to publicly lecture countries with incomparably greater political and military weight. Similar actions have already led to war. The same behavioral pattern, carrying the same risks, is observable today.

Since 2018, Armenia has achieved no strategic successes. No infrastructure projects enhancing sovereignty have been implemented. No new military alliances have been formed. No negotiation process has yielded tangible results. There have only been losses: the war of 2020, the loss of Artsakh in 2023, thousands of human lives lost, a shattered security system, deteriorating relations with a key ally, and increasing external dependence.

Yet, Pashinyan remains in power. This is the central issue. It is the country that bears the losses — not the political leadership. Such a configuration implies that future decisions will be made according to the same logic: without personal responsibility for their consequences.

With each passing day that Pashinyan remains in power, new risks emerge for the country. This is reflected in concrete indicators: the weakening of the army, declining security along the borders, deteriorating economic ties, and increasing dependence on external actors. This is not a forecast, but an ongoing process.

In such a situation, Armenian voters must confront a difficult question: is society prepared to continue supporting a team that has already led the country to defeat, territorial losses, and strategic weakening? Is society ready to entrust governance to a political force engaged in populism, the degradation of human capital, and foreign policy adventurism?

This is not a matter of political preference, but of facts and their consequences. Delegating power to the same leadership once again means ensuring the reproduction of the same outcomes: new losses, further concessions, and the continued weakening of Armenia.

With each passing day that Pashinyan remains in power, new risks emerge for the country.
