The two sides discussed steps to advance the peace agenda.

Apparently — judging by Nikol Pashinyan’s speech, in which he assured CIS leaders that peace between Armenia and Azerbaijan is now a reality — Ilham Aliyev has recognized Armenia’s territorial integrity within the borders of the Armenian SSR and committed to upholding them. Pashinyan even congratulated the CIS leaders on what he described as a historic event: the establishment of peace between Armenia and Azerbaijan on August 8 in Washington, with the mediation of U.S. President Donald Trump.

HOWEVER, PASHINYAN RECEIVED NO APPLAUSE. Nor did he receive any words of congratulations in return. The CIS leaders listened either with skepticism or indifference. Some even struggled to hide an ironic smile.

Perhaps that was because they understood the price of the peace Pashinyan claimed to have “established” was waiting for congratulations accordingly. A lost war. Artsakh emptied of Armenians. Border territories of Armenia now under Azerbaijani control. A pledge to open a transit corridor to Azerbaijan — a project that, if implemented, would force local residents to pack up and leave.

Perhaps it’s because the CIS leaders are hardened people — they’ve been through fire and water. They understand the futility of making concessions in exchange for peace with someone who wouldn’t hesitate to wipe you off the map. With someone who has already driven your compatriots from their homeland and continues to persecute Artsakh representatives.

Perhaps it’s because the CIS leaders know all too well that concessions do not lead to compromise or lasting peace - they lead to a situation where, sooner or later, and likely in the near future, the country will have to fight for its freedom under far worse conditions.

Maybe that’s why the enthusiastic Pashinyan received no congratulations from his counterparts. The seasoned CIS leaders had no intention of indulging Nikol Pashinyan. In fact, despite his demonstrative optimism, for his experienced colleagues he remains little more than a target of jokes and sarcasm - or, in today’s language, trolling.

All of this took place in front of TV cameras — as President of Tajikistan Emomali Rahmon, with a smile on his face, reminded Ilham Aliyev that the first face-to-face meeting between the Azerbaijani president and Nikol Pashinyan had taken place in the capital of Tajikistan. A clear nod to that elevator conversation — and to Rahmon’s own “magic touch.”

President of Belarus Alexander Lukashenko, for his part, repeated his usual sarcastic line: that Nikol Pashinyan has no choice but to sit at the same table with the CIS leaders and endure their jokes — no matter how much Aliyev may be patronizing him at this stage.

Никол Пашинян поздравил лидеров СНГ с историческим событием: установлением мира между Арменией и Азербайджаном 8 августа в Вашингтоне при посредничестве президента США Дональда Трампа.
HOWEVER, PASHINYAN RECEIVED NO APPLAUSE.
