Not long after, Hetq Media Factory published an article claiming that the former president held citizenship of Saint Kitts and Nevis. Following the publication, the National Security Service (NSS) of Armenia launched an official investigation. The case has since been transferred to the Investigative Committee for further examination.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/hetq.am\/hy\/article\/140389\">An article by Hetq.am, dated January 24, 2022,<\/a> pointed to a theory suggesting that Sargsyan\u2019s resignation was directly linked to the revelation of his foreign citizenship.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\u201cThe point is that Armen Sargsyan initiated the official process to renounce his Saint Kitts and Nevis citizenship shortly before being elected president in March 2018,\u201d the article reads. \u201cAccording to the Constitution, this would have made him ineligible for the presidency. Consequently, all presidential decrees issued by Sargsyan, including laws passed, appointments of officials, electoral decisions, and even the naming of the prime minister, may be considered invalid.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>In the same article, Hetq.am reported that \u201cPresident Armen Sargsyan is not likely to return to Armenia, as he may be held criminally responsible for forgery of documents.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p class=\"translation-block\">As early as <a href=\"https:\/\/hetq.am\/hy\/article\/140417\" target=\"_self\">January 25, 2022, Hetq.am cited<\/a> the Prosecutor General\u2019s Advisor, Gor Abrahamyan, confirming that the Prosecutor General\u2019s Office had forwarded materials regarding President Armen Sargsyan\u2019s alleged Saint Kitts and Nevis citizenship to the National Security Service for further investigation.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cGiven that the criminal investigation into Armen Sargsyan\u2019s citizenship \u2014currently being conducted by the National Security Service of the Republic of Armenia \u2014 was launched back in 2021 under Article 325 of the RA Criminal Code, Hetq.am\u2019s article has been submitted to the relevant authorities to examine the circumstances outlined therein as part of the ongoing case,\u201d Hetq.am quoted Gor Abrahamyan as saying.<\/p>\n<p class=\"translation-block\">Earlier, the <a href=\"https:\/\/armtribunal.com\/en\/2025\/03\/22\/obvinenie-serzha-azatovicha-sargsjana\/\" target=\"_self\">Public Tribunal of Armenia stated<\/a> that Armen Sargsyan, a UK citizen who was elevated to the presidency by Serzh Sargsyan, played a role in legitimizing the illegal protests during what it described as a coup d\u2019\u00e9tat.
